At Repair the Sea, our mission is to inspire and empower communities to protect our oceans through Jewish values and traditions. On December 16, 2024, we partnered with OneTable to host a unique "Shabbat for the Sea" dinner, blending the sacredness of Shabbat, Water Torah, with a call to action for ocean conservation. The evening was a powerful reminder of how tradition and environmental stewardship can come together to create meaningful change.
A Celebration of Community and Conservation
Held at a beautiful waterfront park in Boca Raton, Florida, the event brought together over 20 young professionals who shared a Shabbat meal infused with themes of ocean protection. From the décor—featuring sustainable and ocean-inspired elements—to the conversations around the table, every detail was designed to foster a deeper connection to our seas and the Jewish tradition of Tikkun HaYam, repairing the ocean, and Bal Tashchit, a Jewish law that prohibits the wasteful destruction. Bamboo cutlery, paper plates and cups were used to reinforce the sustainable nature of the event, and One Table provided Shabbat guides for each participant.
Together, we curated a vegetarian menu to highlight responsible agriculture and crafted discussions, led by our very own Rabbi Ed Rosenthal, that encouraged participants to reflect on their personal connections to the ocean and how they can contribute to its preservation.

Why "Shabbat for the Sea" Matters
